About Us

Program Mission

To deliver safe patient care through interdisciplinary research, development and commercialization of new medical technologies. This high-profile program is dedicated to the comprehensive education of medical, engineering and business fellows. Additionally, the MUBIP will encourage and be dependent upon improving collaborative investigational and commercialization efforts throughout the University, the state of Missouri and international. The long term success will ultimately result in a sustainable, commercial success for The University of Missouri.

Who Are We?

The MU Biodesign and Innovation Program (MUBIP) is led by a group of surgeons and engineers from the University of Missouri-Columbia who believe and share a common vision in biodesign and innovation. Members of both departments have successfully invented and taken medical products to market. Several surgical faculty members are serial inventors. Many business areas in biodesign believe in the MUBIP mission, including experts in the medical device arena, entrepreneurs, venture capitalist and angel fund investors. As a team, we strive to improve health care through collaboration and education.

What makes the MU Biodesign and Innovation Program unique?

The MU Biodesign and Innovation Program is located on the University of Missouri-Columbia campus. The College of Veterinary Medicine, Office of Technology Management & Industry Relations (OTMIR), Office of Research, School of Medicine, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, and Department of Surgery are all MUBIP partners and located on the MU campus. Additional strengths on our campus are the College of Business, College of Veterinary Medicine, School of Law and Department of Life Science. MU is one of six universities that houses an engineering school, medical school and veterinary school, which is a strong foundation for interdisciplinary research.

MUBIP also benefits from resources off campus. Professionals in the biodesign field provide knowledge in their expert areas during the lecture series. Examples of this are angel investors, successful entrepreneurs, venture capitalist and serial inventors. These experts provide knowledge during the business phase of the fellowship.

Surgery

Several surgeons within the School of Medicine, Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Department of Surgery are considered to be serial inventors, which gives MUBIP an advantage in medical device technology. These surgeons also have broad experience in the medical industry. Some surgeons have founded companies around new medical devices, and many are experienced in obtaining patents. With this level of experience and having a nationally recognized Minimally Invasive Surgery Program, the School of Medicine, Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Department of Surgery provide a strong foundation for MUBIP.
