Hospital Autopsy Services

The Boone/Callaway County Medical Examiner’s office is located on the first floor of the School of Medicine at the University of Missouri. The Greene County Medical Examiner’s office is located at 916 Campbell Drive in Springfield, Missouri. These offices were recently renovated and include state-of-the-art facilities. The medical examiner offices provide services for more than 40 Missouri counties. Boone, Callaway and Greene counties have contracted for comprehensive medical examiner services. The remaining counties have either local coroners or local medical examiners who refer cases.

The medical examiner’s office receives approximately 2,500 calls per year and scene investigations are conducted on an as-needed basis. In some cases, a post-mortem examination is also performed as part of the investigation. The death scene investigators and forensic technicians are highly trained personnel who give top priority to every decedent. Along with our forensic pathologists, the staff members provide independent, concise and well-documented scientific evidence and expert service to the community including families of the deceased, law enforcement, coroners, attorneys and health care providers. The vision for our office is to provide continually improving, high quality academic medical examiner services.

Forensic services in Boone County also provide the hospital autopsy services for nearby hospitals. Working with private pathologists and university pathologists, autopsies are conducted at the request of the next-of-kin, often at the physician’s request to resolve an unsolved aspect of a patient’s clinical course. Some families also request an autopsy, independent of the hospital through the offices of the forensic services.

Our forensic pathologists, Drs. Carl Stacy, Jeff Harkey and Deiter Duff, assist with community education. We are developing forensic sciences interest groups at each of the offices. If you are interested in forensic sciences and would like to be included in our mailing list for the forensic sciences interest group, please contact Dr. Stacy at
